Werner Herzog has made it a profession to inquire and understand culture more than most people. He approaches new concepts with a unique sense of wonder for subjects that would find the average millennial, with their experiences deep levels of overcorrected-mindful hashtags, overlooking. And this dude is 78. He lived in the eras that shaped those hashtags.

ANYWAY! When he's not hanging out with the beloved Grogu, this decorated documentarian keeps busy with myriad projects. And as it turns out, he might have experienced some urethane to concrete inducing road rash in those 78 years of experience. Why? But what does he have to do with skateboarding? Technically speaking, nothing.

The always engaging JENKEM magazine recently got Herzog on a video call to discuss skateboarding and watch some skate clips. Herzog marvels at the resilience skateboarders show while perfecting a trick. His approval of Mark Gonzales skating in an art gallery makes the any wood pusher smile a little bigger than any of us will admit.

Werner has no background in skating. But he is one of us. He preaches maxims like getting the shot by any means necessary, carrying bolt cutters everywhere, and thwarting institutional cowardice with guerrilla tactics. His entire career has been built on a DIY approach to life, his craft banged into existence through decades of trial and failure. Sounds familiar right?
